Hoogte Lengte Breedte
a solo exhibition by Willem de Haan
03–17.12.21
curated by Lina Ejdaa
in CLAPTRAP Antwerp
Whilst curator Lina and Willem discussed possible exhibition formats for their upcoming show, the Medusa team measured the essential dimensions of the iconic CLAPTRAP cellars. It was the first time they all met together, not yet knowing the freshly scribbled floor plan would later take on the lead role in this exhibition.
The title “Hoogte Lengte Breedte” is one of many things taken out of the sketch made during that initial meeting. Willem recreated the hand drawn floor plan to fit the true scale of the exhibition space. Apart from this in-situ installation, two other works ‘30 cm, various dimensions’ (2019) and the series ‘paper balls’ (2021) will be presented in the adjacent space.
Notions of scale, authenticity and suggestion are being questioned by recreating existing situations in alternative settings using exact replicas. Through this working method Willem challenges and undermines unwritten rules that apply at these specific locations. Over time, the act of measuring has become a leitmotif within his artistic practice. A gesture that makes the object seem noteworthy, contrasting it with the banality of many daily objects and situations.
